POLITICAL LEADERSHIP FORUM

Dr. Soledad Rica LlorenteIt began with a concept. It evolved into a goal. It took a shape and life of its own. In the end it became bigger than imagined and culminated into what we can rightfully claim as a pride of the Filipino American community and the California State University East Bay. We are talking about the recently concluded symposium “Political Leadership among Filipino-Americans: Theories and Practice.”

After 10 months of planning, it was held on Oct. 3, 2008 at CSUEB with approximately 150 attendees representing a spectrum of students, faculty, scholars, political leaders and members of the Filipino American community and the general public. Many took the day off from work and from classes. Many traveled from long distances like Honolulu, across the Bay, and from neighboring cities like Fremont and Newark. In a way, it was a classroom, a laboratory of learning, a marketplace of ideas.

A partnership of the Pilipino American Student Association and the Center for Filipino Studies, the event was a testimony of what the university and the community can do together. Hold a forum that was well organized, dynamic and a living, practical source of education.

Let me close with the observation of one of the attendees, Chris Mateo of Alliant International University: “First off, I wanted to thank you for such a wonderful event.  I was highly impressed by the organization, the speakers, and the timing of the symposium and would hope to be made aware of future events. Secondly, I was captivated by your political speakers and by your presentations overall…”

I invite you to preview the presentations in PowerPoint in this issue of the Journal. The pictures are on the website of the Center at http://filipinostudies.csueastbay.edu.
